Three Keys to Effective Timber Treatment

Friday, September 26, 2014

Autumn is the time of year that we handle a lot of timber treatment in Newbury and surrounding Berkshire. These jobs are most often the result of woodworm that have spent the summer months burrowing into timbers and generally causing havoc. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to eradicate an infestation without getting right to the source. Handling woodworm is not as simple as spraying insecticide or putting down a trap.

You will be happy to know that Pest Control Services (PCS) has been the leading pest control company handling woodworm issues in Berkshire for many years. We are also the Sovereign Approved specialists in Berkshire, and specific areas of Hampshire, Oxfordshire, and Wiltshire. We can offer guarantees of up to 30 years for all woodworm treatments, underwritten by Sovereign Chemicals.

As we see it, there are three keys to effective timber treatment for woodworm:

1.Proper Assessment - Woodworm can harm your timbers for up to five years. Therefore, it is not good enough to do a cursory survey of your property. Instead, we carry out a full survey of the timbers in your home followed by a written report detailing our findings and treatment recommendations.

2.Timber Access - Should your property require treatment for an active infestation, we need open access to as much of the affected timber as possible. Timber has to be prepared prior to treatment if we are to be successful. This includes cleaning the wood, removing paint and other finishes, and vacuuming boreholes to remove sawdust.

3.Proper Treatment - The last step in effective timber treatment involves completely saturating affected timbers with our Sovereign insecticide. The solution needs to completely penetrate the timbers to be effective. If it does not reach the core of the wood, there may be some woodworm that survive the treatment.

PCS knows that these three points are the keys to our success for effective timber treatment. They are part of every woodworm infestation we handle. Should you need our services, do not hesitate to ask as many questions as necessary to understand the treatment process.

The Problem with Woodworm

Why do we go to such great lengths for proper timber treatment? Because the complications that can arise from an ineffective treatment mean more expense for our customers. The problem with woodworm is that their life cycle is so long. It all starts in the larval stage.

It is the immature woodworm larvae that eat away at timbers. They use the starch in wood pulp as their primary source of energy, consuming as much as they can to encourage proper development. However, the problem is that this stage can last anywhere from two to five years. An improper timber treatment could leave plenty of the worms alive and well in your timbers for years afterward.

Do not leave your timbers to an inexperienced or unqualified pest management company. Instead, call Pest Control Services (on 01635 250 852) for Sovereign Approved timber treatment in Newbury, Thatcham, Hungerford, and all of Berkshire. We will send one of our experienced technicians to your location right away.
