How to prevent rat and mouse infestations on your property

As the colder weather draws closer and we begin to say goodbye to our gardens for another year, it is important to be mindful that we are not the only ones looking to the inside for comfort to see out the winter months. It is optimal time for rodents to begin choosing their spots to nest and as best practice you should follow these steps to ensure your property is and continues to be a rodent free space during the colder months.

Ensure your cleanliness and hygiene is up to scratch!

Perhaps the first thing we look for when we are called out is any potential food sources and general clutter located around the property, typically this means ensuring your bins are always secured, your hedges & bushes are trimmed back, and the garden and areas around the property are tidy. It is also essential to limit potential food and water supplies in the garden e.g., bird feeders!

Staying on top of this will limit the possibility of rodent activity on your property as clutter can be nice hiding and nesting spots and food and water sources can be…well that’s self-explanatory!

Close up the gaps!

Doing a quick check around your property for any gaps in the building and ensuring these are filled (especially in older properties) can help to prevent any rodent infestation. However, this can be a tricky task as they can squeeze through gaps the size of a 50 pence piece!

Typical entry places:

• Holes in the cavity
• Man-hole covers
• Drainpipes
• Air vents
• Doors/Windows left open
• Garages
• Cracks in the wall.
