Last year, a local resident near Denbigh Moors, in north-east Wales, was among dozens of passers-by to observe half-a-dozen dead moles hung on a fence along a quiet country road. This year, a similar grim 'memorial' was considerably more sizeable: 50 dead moles were found hung along the same fence line. The RSPCA is asking for help in finding out who is responsible for the act so they can determine whether an offence was committed or not.
In the meantime, NFU Cymru president Stephen James told the Daily Post that the dead animals serve as a reminder of the importance of mole control among UK farmers and residential property owners. Not only are the animals a problem in Wales, they are also a problem in England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland as well. Moles can threaten farmlands and cattle alike, digging miles of underground tunnels, contaminating soil, damaging grasslands, and carrying disease.
Early Eradication of Moles Important
The biggest problem with moles is that they are so good at avoiding capture. Moles are typically thought to live in a solitary environment, but we have first-hand experience in finding multiple moles inhabiting the same area. Where there is one mole on a piece of property, there are likely others inhabiting their own tunnel systems.
