A wasps' nest can be a huge inconvenience if you have one on your property, and it can be tempting to try and deal with it yourself.
However, there are a variety of reasons why this is a job better suited to professional pest control experts. Here we explain why.
Do you know your wasp species?
There are hundreds of species of wasps, many of which look very similar. However, only a few of these (particularly Common and German wasps) are seen as pests and some do not sting. In addition, it can be easy to confuse wasps with other striped insects such as hornets and some species of bee. These are not only less harmful than wasps; they can also be essential parts of the ecosystem. Some bee species in particular are protected, so it's illegal to destroy them or their nests.
DIY products are often insufficient
While a wide variety of DIY products are available for getting rid of wasps' nests, they are unadvisable for the following reasons:
- The levels of chemicals they contain are often too low to be fatal to wasps, and can create the opposite effect, causing them to become hyperactive and aggressive.
- Wasps often build their nests high up, meaning you have to risk your safety by trying to deal with them while up a ladder.
Stings can be highly dangerous
Attempting to dispose of a wasps' nest yourself puts you at a high risk of multiple stings. About 10% of people have an adverse reaction to wasp stings. In the most serious cases an allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis can occur. Symptoms include:
- Swelling of the face, lips or throat
- Breathing difficulties
- Dizziness
- Loss of consciousness
- Nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
- Weak or racing pulse.
Anyone experiencing any of these symptoms should seek medical attention as soon as possible following a wasp sting.
