Cooler Weather Signals Start of Insect Invasions

Thursday, October 16, 2014

The arrival of cooler weather in late September and early October signals us that it is time to pull out the warm sweaters and ready ourselves for the coming winter. However, it also signals insects to start looking for warm, dry quarters for wintering over. Believe it or not, insects invade many homes in Britain every autumn without homeowners ever knowing.

If nothing else, insects are resilient opportunists that will look for any opportunity to survive. In cooler climates such as ours, that means finding protection against the weather in a place that also has ample food and water supplies. Your home makes a good target. And why not? It has everything that insects need for a comfortable winter.

Here are just a few examples of insects to be concerned about during autumn:

• Woodworm – Woodworm are nothing more than beetles still in the larval stage. They will burrow their way into timbers and wood furniture in order to feed and stay warm.

• Cluster Flies – Cluster flies tend to congregate in attic or loft areas, getting into homes through small holes in roofing materials and eaves. For some reason, they like areas painted in light hues. You can tell you have an invasion of cluster flies because they leave very distinguishing stains on the walls.

• Ants and Cockroaches – You may have problems with ants and cockroaches year-round, but heavier concentrations of the insects can be found in homes during the autumn and winter. Cockroaches are especially fond of kitchen areas because of the ample food supply. Ants can be found just about anywhere.

• Bees and Wasps – Bees and wasps tend to hibernate during the winter. If they make their way into your home, it would not be unusual for a nest to be established inside a south or west-facing wall. Such locations provide the most amount of sunlight that will heat the walls and keep the insects warm.

An autumn insect invasion does not have to make your home uninhabitable. Instead of ignoring a problem hoping that it will go away in the spring, call Pest Control Services.
