3 Pests to Watch for During Autumn

Friday, November 09, 2018

Another bee and wasp season is quickly drawing to a close in the UK. Now our attentions are turning to autumn and winter pests. As specialists in rodent control in Berkshire and the surrounding areas, we know this is the time of year when we start hearing more stories about pests looking for a nice, cosy place to spend the winter.

We had an especially nice summer this year, which is good in that it allowed us to get outdoors and really enjoy all of the beauty the UK has to offer. But nice summers lead to pest problems come autumn. Now that everyone is back to work and school, it's time for Control Services to start gearing up for a different kind of work.

Here are three pests to keep an eye on during the autumn months:

1. Rodents

This past summer was very good to mice, rats, and squirrels. Cooperative weather offered abundant opportunities for these animals to do what they do - including increasing their numbers. We're expecting a busier autumn and winter due to how good the summer weather was.

Our rodent friends are glad to be out and about as long as the weather supports their eating and procreation habits. But with temperatures getting colder, they are starting to look for safe places to over-winter. That could mean your home or commercial building.

We recommend not trying to get rid of rats and squirrels on your own. Both pests can be rather vicious when threatened, so it's not worth taking any chances. Call us for rodent control in Reading, throughout Berkshire, and beyond.

2. Flies/Maggots

Rodents aren't the only pests looking for a nice winter home. Flies are right there with them. Flies are not necessarily dangerous to the same extent rodents are, but they can be quite intimidating if an infestation reaches a pretty significant volume. But also consider that flies leave maggots in their wake. That's where the real problems come in.

Flies are partial to safe, warm spaces where they can hideout without the fear of predation. It is not uncommon to find them in a loft, for example. The goal is to get rid of them and their eggs before maggots become a problem. The last thing you want is to see maggots falling from the ceiling or infesting the space under the kitchen sink.

3. Bed Bugs

Last are bed bugs. These little pests become a problem during the autumn because people bring them back home with them after being on holiday. Indeed, we generally see an increase in bed bug calls this time of year. The thing with bed bugs is that they are very difficult to eradicate. It's best to call us right away rather than trying to deal with an infestation yourself.

Whether you need help getting rid of rodents, maggots or bed bugs, Control Services is the one to call. We've been serving Berkshire and the surrounding areas for more than 20 years.
