Wasps love the sun too!

It’s that time of year again, the sun is shining as we enter typically the hottest months of the year (although that’s not so predictable in the UK) and that means one thing in the pest control business- wasps are beginning to come out to play! Naturally as we all come out of hibernation from the winter to start gardening or spark up the BBQ we are more than likely to come into contact with one or two wasps.

During the warmest summer months wasps are at their busiest whether its, laying in their eggs, hatching, or travelling outside the nest to find food to feed the larvae, the nest is working at maximum capacity.

It is important to watch out for wasp nests that may be placed on your property to prevent any uninvited guests from entering your house or disrupting you in your garden; typically, they will be attracted to any food outside ruining picnics and BBQs! As well as being a nuisance, wasps are easily aggravated and can cause a painful sting.

So, what are the obvious signs that indicate you may have a wasp nest on your property?

1. Increased wasp activity

Coming across the odd individual wasp is to be expected during the summer months, however if this becomes more frequent then it may be a sign of a nest. Wasps will fly in and out of an entrance point from the nest typically found in, roof eaves, garden sheds, wall cavities, garden decking & roof spaces.

    2. A loud buzzing or cracking noise

While wasps are constructing their nest, they tend to make a loud distinctive buzzing noise along with noises that can seem like tapping or crackling. This is an early sign that you may have a wasp nest on your property even if you can’t see it.

      3. The actual nest itself!

The most obvious indication that you have a wasp nest is seeing the visible structure of it. The construction and engineering of the nest is to be admired, starting of as the size of a golf ball, and growing rapidly, made from untreated dead wood they take from their surroundings. The nest can eventually have the capacity of around 3-6,000 wasps!
