Winter Vermin Control Tips from Control Services

Friday, January 05, 2018

Pest control in the UK is cyclical. By that we mean that changes in the weather largely determine what pests are most likely to manifest themselves during the different seasons. The two most commonly addressed pests during the winter are mice and rats. We recommend that our clients employ good vermin control practices at this time of year.

Mice and rats live long and productive lives year-round. They do not generally become a nuisance while the weather is warm because there are plenty of food sources outside. But when those food sources start to wane in the late autumn and early winter, rats and mice begin looking for indoor sources. They also do not mind finding a warm and cosy place indoors to bed down for the winter.

The Problems They Cause

Mice and rats are problematic for a lot of reasons. First, they are not afraid to go digging around the kitchen to find something to eat. They can get into your cereal and biscuits simply by gnawing through the packaging. And consider this: rodent droppings in your food are never a good thing.

Mice and rats also have a bad habit of gnawing through timbers and chewing on wires and cables. Having a family of rats living in your attic could lead to significant structural damage and an elevated risk of fire. In simple terms, rodents are destructive animals when living inside a home. Human beings are not meant to share living space with mice and rats.

Vermin Control Tips

The good news is that effective vermin control is not complicated. The place to start is doing a thorough inspection of your home to seek out any and all entry points. Rats and mice do not need a lot of room to get in; just a small crack in the foundation or a gap in the roof line is enough. All access points should be sealed the minute they are identified.

The next thing to do is ensure that no food in your home is left exposed. Use plastic bins to store things like biscuits, breads, cereals, and flour. Keep fruits and vegetables in the fridge. At the end of the day, make sure to give the kitchen floor a thorough sweeping. Don't leave any crumbs lying around.

Rubbish is another big thing for vermin control. It's best to use a rubbish bin in the kitchen that you can completely seal. And when the bin does get full, do not allow it to spill over. Empty the bin right away.
