How to kill woodworm

Tuesday, November 10, 2015

No sane human being enjoys killing, but sometimes it's necessary.

A woodworm infestation is a prime example. Woodworm can completely decimate timber if given the time, and as we've discussed previously, that's bad news for period properties.

Think you've got woodworm? Here's some tell-tale signs:

  • Beetles in the home - dead or alive;
  • Sawdust in or around holes in timber;
  • A clean emergence around holes (fresh holes);
  • Crumbling or brittle wood;
  • Bore dust below infested timber.

If you're able to identify an active woodworm infestation, it's time to treat it now.

How to kill woodworm - small infestations

Woodworm is treated using chemicals that the poison larvae and adult beetles. This can be achieved with over-the-counter products by yourself - but only in mild cases.

Some of the best-reviewed products of this type include Sika Sikaguard Woodworm Killer and Seahaven Woodwork Killer Concentrate. These products are available for around £20-£30 online, and they are proven to provide long-lasting protection against all wood-boring insects on unpolished wood. If you have only a small infestation, such as on a bench, then you can treat the area with an insecticide spray like Rentokil Woodworm Aerosol.

Simply follow the manufacturer's instructions for the best results, and remember to wear gloves and a respiratory mask for your own safety.

How to kill woodworm - extensive infestations

However, while you can kill woodworm yourself, it takes an expert to diagnose the extent of a woodworm infestation and to treat the likes of support beams and floor boards. The reason we say this, is because you simply can't put a price on safety and woodworm infestations can stretch way beyond what can be seen with the naked eye.

If you believe you have woodworm in any areas of you home - or business - that will put yours and your building's being at risk, it's time to call in a pest control company who'll carry out a survey of your property to ascertain the true extent of the infestation.

Being a Sovereign Approved Contractor, we use Sovereign Chemicals' products exclusively in our work, and we have an extremely high success rate with these products. Sovereign SOVAQ F/I and SOVAQ FWS concentrates eliminate woodworm completely without damaging the timber and they are suitable for second and third treatments, which is testament to their timber-friendliness.
