BPCA Warns against DIY Pest Treatment

Monday, July 06, 2015

As experts continue predicting a very busy summer for pest control companies like ours, the British Pest Control Association (BPCA) is warning consumers about the temptation to attempt DIY pest treatments. Experts are already saying this could be an exceptional year for certain pests such as rats and wasps whose numbers remain largely intact after a mild winter. The BPCA sees this as the perfect recipe for pest problems to get out of control.

In an official statement, the BPCA made it very clear that pest control is a very specific kind of exercise that requires knowledge and skill. Where infestations are already well-established, DIY efforts by homeowners may not be enough to adequately deal with the problem. This could lead to further exacerbation by allowing pest populations to continue growing. A homeowner may think that he or she has correctly handled a pest problem only to discover things are exponentially worse later.

The BPCA is especially concerned about council-owned homes throughout the UK. It explains that while nearly every council handled pest control in-house a decade ago, very few do so today. Cost-cutting measures have forced local councils to leave pest control to tenants. Understandably, tenants are reluctant to put money into properties they do not own. Yet ignoring is not a good strategy where pests are concerned.
